Abstract

The key word with respect to computer‐aided manufacturing is “speed”. Almost all new developments in this high‐tech field centre on decreasing production time. First, the importance of an up‐to‐date software program that will cut decision‐making time is shown. Next, DOS extenders for 386 based systems offer increased speed but can be expensive. Finally, the effects of new developments on the labourforce and labour unions are also compared. All of these related topics are clearly enhanced by real‐life examples.

Abstract

Discusses the adoption of CADCAM techniques by US manufacturers in the struggle for business survival with reference to case examples. Argues that CADCAM software offers valuable advantages over traditional design/manufacturing methods, principally lack of mistakes in initial production, and the reduction of both decision and design times by drastic amounts. Concludes that the attribute of speed which makes CADCAM such an advance is what is required by US companies to stay alive.

Abstract

The assignment of targets to instruments in developing countries cannot satisfactorily follow any simple universal rule. Which approach is appropriate is influenced by whether the economy is dominated by primary exports, by the importance of the domestic bond market and bank credit, by the extent of existing restriction in foreign exchange and financial markets, by the presence or absence of persistent high inflation, and by the existence or non‐existence of an active international market in the country's currency. Eighteen observations and maxims on stabilisation policy are tentatively drawn (pp. 64–8) from the material reviewed, and the maxims are partly summarised (pp. 69–71) in a schematic assignment, with variations, of targets to instruments.

Abstract

Many destination marketers organise events to draw economic benefits over the short and long term. However, this chapter suggests that events can result in more than economic benefits, as they can be used to improve a destination’s branding and image. The authors explain how the organisation and implementation of successful events can enhance the destination’s attributes. They explore the consumer-based brand equity (CBBE) of the event and examine its relationship with other variables, including the destination’s image. Moreover, they maintain that music festivals can enhance the destination’s image and branding, particularly, when the visitors share their positive experiences with others. The authors make reference to two Portuguese events: NOS Primavera Sound event and NOS ALIVE. In conclusion, they imply that such music events are improving the brand equity among customers and adding value to the destination marketing of Portugal.

Abstract

A systems perspective of waste management allows an integrated approach not only to the five basic functional elements of waste management itself (generation, reduction, collection, recycling, disposal), but to the problems arising at the interfaces with the management of energy, nature conservation, environmental protection, economic factors like unemployment and productivity, etc. This monograph separately describes present practices and the problems to be solved in each of the functional areas of waste management and at the important interfaces. Strategies for more efficient control are then proposed from a systems perspective. Systematic and objective means of solving problems become possible leading to optimal management and a positive contribution to economic development, not least through resource conservation. India is the particular context within which waste generation and management are discussed. In considering waste disposal techniques, special attention is given to sewage and radioactive wastes.

Abstract

Purpose

The Ghanaian economy has experienced relative stability, improved macroeconomic performance and resilience over the past few years, following the introduction of a new monetary policy framework called inflation targeting (IT). The purpose of this paper is to look at IT and its effect on inflation management in Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed monthly time series data from 1980 to 2009.

Findings

The results gathered in this study demonstrate that IT has had a significant impact on the reduction of inflation series in recent years and has reduced the persistence of inflation series considerably. It is largely amplified that the implementation of an IT framework in Ghana has been a success and has contributed to a change in the conduct of monetary policy towards best practice.

Research limitations/implications

The study could have used a lot more macroeconomic variables.

Practical implications

The paper's findings are very important for Central Banks that are using the IT framework, or planning to do so, for efficiency and effectiveness.

Originality/value

The paper is the first of its kind for developing countries, especially in Africa and Ghana for that matter.
